Living in Rhythm to Harness Circadian Health
Throughout history we’ve been embedded in a rhythmic world. As the sun goes down the light changes, it cools off, and darkness falls. In the morning the sun rises bright and beautiful, while the day warms. Not only are there daily patterns, but also seasonal changes too. These predictable environmental signals synchronize and strengthen our circadian system.

The circadian system extends from deep in the brain, throughout our body’s organs, down to the clock genes in every cell. Every aspect of our body has this 24-hour pattern, which shapes our health. We want to have the strong circadian rhythm provided by natural time cues, as it is a sign of health.

The problem is that now with electric light we no longer get those predictable signals. Our circadian system becomes muted, with less melatonin, altered cortisol patterns, and deficiencies throughout the body. In this dynamic course, you will re-build a strong circadian system, and learn to live in rhythm with the earth, as people have done throughout time. Join us today!

The Living in Rhythm to Harness Circadian Health Course

Module 1: Benefits of Living in Rhythm

Our modern lifestyle in the built environment is vastly different from how people have lived throughout history. We are embedded in the natural world, and our health depends on cues from that environment. Compared to the natural light-dark signals provided by the sun, electric light is muted, at only 1/100 the light. We will start with a look at the time cues people have historically been exposed to, and the positive health effects of being synchronized with the environment. Then we’ll connect with our own experiences, and assess what health conditions we may be experiencing due to circadian mis-alignment. Lastly, capture your baseline so we can build from there.

Module 2: Influences of Light and Darkness

The main driver of our circadian system is deep in the brain. This important area gets input from the eyes about the color and intensity of light at each moment. Sunlight changes predictably through the day, and provides a time cue. In the morning that sunlight triggers the wakeful, alert, system in our body, while sunset lighting cues our body to prepare for sleep by increasing melatonin. Electric lighting in our homes and offices is quite different from sunlight, so we miss those cues. In this unit we’ll learn all about strategies and lifestyle practices to synchronize our master clock with the environment, improving daytime alertness and nighttime sleep.

Module 3: Daily Time Cues

There are also 24-hour patterns at every level of the body, from our cells on up to our organs. Optimally, we want all these to be operating in synchrony. However, they can get misaligned, so they are not functioning together as needed for optimal health. At this level of our circadian system the main time cues are meal times, temperature, and even exercise times. Learn about these additional levels of your circadian system, and how to align them for optimal function. We will step-by-step create your custom lifestyle routine that will strengthen your circadian system as a foundation of health.

Module 4: Leverage your Chronotype

Are you a morning lark, night owl, or neither? This is an important consideration, and one that is sometimes overlooked in health recommendations. You may have heard of the benefits of getting early (ie ‘The 5am Club’), but this isn’t true for night owls. Let’s identify your chronotype or internal clock, and leverage it to strategically schedule your activities at the right time for you. This can make all the difference, as our performance will be best at the right time of day. We’ll also consider strategies to shift your body clock if need be, understanding there’s value to people being on different schedules.

Module 5: Changes Across the Lifespan

With aging we see the circadian system become less pronounced. Core body temperature and melatonin secretion patterns become muted, along with many other rhythms. Chronotype also changes over the lifespan by swinging significantly later during the teen years, then gradually shifting earlier over the following decades so that seniors are more often morning types. Understanding these physiological changes will help design the optimal lifestyle for yourself at different ages, and for your loved ones. This is where we continue to build a lifestyle where you are both Living In Rhythm with the earth, and with your own body, aligning them together for optimal health.

Module 6: Relevance for Health and Disease

Chronic disease is on the rise around the world. Part of it may be that we’ve stepped away from the natural world into the built environment. Many of the most common diseases have connection to the circadian system. For one, melatonin has actions beyond sleep, acting as a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant and mitochondrial support. Melatonin is strongly suppressed by artificial light at night, and chronically low levels may contribute to disease. We will talk here about those most common disorders, and what is known of the circadian connection. Circadian medicine is part of a holistic treatment approach.

Module 7: Living in Rhythm

The idea of Living In Rhythm with the earth is a new idea for many people, but yet it really is an old idea that is re-emerging. Over the next decade this awareness will grow, but you can benefit from this information now. It’s a lifestyle practice that boosts physical and mental health by synchronizing your circadian system with the environment, and also synchronizes the many levels of your circadian system together. Human beings are embedded in the rhythms of the Earth, synchronizing with it strengthens our health, performance and wellbeing. Learn to make this a lasting lifestyle. You will be glad you started now!
