Module 1: The Human Connection with Nature

From the beginning of human history, people were deeply connected to the earth, its’ seasons, and rhythms. We were embedded in Nature. That powerful influence shaped human physiology. Now that’s no longer true. With the invention of electricity we’ve moved indoors, away from Nature. Now we can sufficiently light and heat our homes, transport and store food, so can live easily in urban cities. But yet our physiology is still designed for that connection to Nature. In this unit we will relive our favorite memories of being in Nature, pinpoint exactly what we experience, and learn to use visualization to bring back those peak experiences! Explore the meaning of Nature Cure.

Module 2: Mental Health and Happiness

It’s clear – time in nature decreases stress, and increases happiness. We all want that, don’t we?! Nature exposure is also associated with decreased anxiety, and fewer anti-depressant prescriptions. Nature Cure therapy is part of a comprehensive plan. There are so many ways that Nature promotes mental health! We’ll review the multiple mechanisms – Stress Recovery Theory, Attention Restoration Theory, oxytocin, and more. Then learn what aspects of mental health improve with time in Nature, and whether this could help you and your loved ones. We’ll get into the specifics of what type of setting, and what activity while you are in Nature, will improve mental health the most. 

Module 3: Nature Cure for Common Diseases

We have positive physiological responses to compounds in Nature, particularly the terpene chemicals given off by coniferous trees (they’re responsible for that lovely pine scent!) Optimal sunlight and darkness also impact our functioning from the brain, right down to the mitochondria within our cells. In this unit we’ll do a deep dive into cardiovascular health and immune health, plus briefly review other medical conditions which show a connection to Nature. Module 4: Benefits of Different Natural Settings

There are so many beautiful natural settings throughout the world – from the sea to mountains, beaches to lakes, deserts to forests, and many others. Which resonates with you? It’s important for Nature Cure that the setting be right for you, and we each have an environment that suits us best. The right Nature Cure is therapeutic. In this unit we will explore the health benefits of these various settings: water vs. green vs. brown. Module 5: Easy (Daily!) Ways to Connect to Nature

Sometimes when I mention Nature Cure, what comes to mind first for people is camping trips. The good news is that we can incorporate Nature easily into our daily routine, and get health benefits! We will get hands-on in this module, starting with incorporating Nature into your home with art and plants. Next we’ll incorporate Nature into your routine. Make Nature Cure and wellness part of your life. Even during the work day, you can intentionally connect to Nature during breaks. Continue on to incorporate some gardening, or do one-time projects to increase the green density in your neighborhood. These easy strategies add up over time to make a big impact!
