It takes good skills to ensure everyone is sleeping well, especially when you bring people of all ages together under one roof, with different sleep needs and biorhythms. Module 2: Circadian Rhythms Across the Lifespan

Living in a family household, you intuitively know that people of different ages tend to sleep at different times. Why is that? Is it inevitable, or could we all somehow get on the same schedule? Circadian rhythms are at the center of this difference. Not only do circadian rhythms impact sleep, but also alertness and performance, as well as health parameters. First, build your understanding of how circadian rhythms work. Then refine that with an understanding of how environmental factors such as light and darkness exposure can shift our circadian rhythms. Design lifestyle routines for your family that positively strengthen circadian rhythms to promote optimal performance and deep sleep.

Module 3: Sleep in Childhood

Sleep in childhood is unique in a few special ways. This has benefits for growth, yet also increases some sleep disorders such as night terrors and sleep walking. Other common sleep disorders in children include obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and insufficient sleep syndrome. Sleep problems impact both children’s behavior, and their ability to learn. Identify the red flags of sleep disorders in kids, and learn what are the best next steps if you suspect a sleep disorder. Determine how much sleep your child does best with, “exactly how many hours of sleep do a 6 year old need?” and create a lifestyle that allows that sleep night-after-night. The last section discusses sleep in children with ADHD and other conditions. (Starts with age 5 year old sleep issues).

Whether or not they want to, teens’ body clock shifts later so they fall asleep later and wake up later. This can be tough on teens and families alike, as often school start times prevent them from getting the sleep they need. This module focuses on practices to optimize teen sleep as much as possible so they can meet the demands of their day. During the teen years the sleep environment starts to have a bigger impact, so learn how to create an optimal sleep space. We will also discuss sleep disorders that can show up in the teen years, and where to follow up if you suspect a problem. Get your whole family sleeping well!

Module 5: Sleep in Adulthood

It’s 35% of adults who have insufficient sleep, 15% have chronic insomnia, 15% have restless legs syndrome, and 10% have obstructive sleep apnea. Though these are the most common sleep problems, though there are many more (58!). Sleep also has a profound effect on our overall health, increasing the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic pain, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, to name just a few. For family sleep institute these family sleep habits. Create time for the sleep you need to thrive, we’ve got tips and skills to get you there! Starting in puberty, women have more sleep complaints than men. Yet it's only recently that researchers have begun to understand why women have this experience. We’ll start off looking at the monthly hormone cycle, and how it impacts women’s sleep. Learn ways to keep your sleep solid throughout the month. Next evaluate the increase in sleep complaints and disorders in pregnancy, and the impact on the mother and infant. The last lesson is all about sleep changes during the menopausal transition and into the older years. Throughout this module you’ll learn how some sleep disorders show up differently in women, and what to keep an eye out for specifically. Get the whole family sleeping well!

Module 7: Senior Sleep and Circadian Rhythms

Changes to our sleep physiology with age change our experience. Along with that, our circadian rhythm can become muted, so we’re awake more in the night, and fall asleep more easily during the day. Learn what is normal and what needs further evaluation. There’s also a big increase in the prevalence of sleep disorders. Sleep problems in themselves can be red flags of other medical conditions emerging, including Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, among others. Learn strategies to preserve quality sleep, and maintain energy during the day, in various living situations. These are family sleep solutions. During our golden years we want the best for ourselves and our loved ones, sleep is key.
